Are you protected during a flood?
You probably have property insurance to protect your home and belongings. But what about protections from flood damage? Many homeowners mistakenly believe their homeowners insurance policy covers flood damage. Standard homeowners insurance doesn’t cover flooding, so it’s important to have protection from the floods associated with heavy rains and other conditions that impact communities. Melting snow can cause flooding and new construction can also contribute to flooding during heavy rainfall.
Everyone is at risk of flooding and some flooding situations develop slowly while others appear with little warning. A few inches of water can be costly. The average residential flood claim is almost $30,000. Up to 75% of buildings in the United States that are located in areas with a high risk of flooding are not covered by flood insurance.
The right coverage is unique to you in Washington. To find out how to protect your family and your future, call Carriage Insurance Agency: 425-888-5066
All flood insurance is offered through the National Flood Insurance Program, the NFIP, federally backed flood insurance. http://www.fema.gov/business/nfip/
In 1968, Congress created the NFIP to help provide a way for homeowners to protect their property. The NFIP offers flood insurance to homeowners, renters, and business owners if their community participates in the program. To be eligible, participating communities must agree to adopt and enforce ordinances that meet or exceed Federal Emergency Management Association requirements to reduce the risk of flooding.
What do you need to do to make sure you have the coverage you need?
Having a flood preparedness plan is an important first step. You can also find out more about the NFIP and how it can help you protect yourself by visiting www.floodsmart.gov or by calling 888-379-9531. A 30-day waiting period is required between the time you purchase flood insurance and the time it goes into effect.
